Formerly home to a substantial tile manufacturing factory, today the small town of Alfred, New York, boasts a legacy of modest, 100-year-old houses and garages with out-sized, elaborately tiled roofs made by factory workers who were allowed to take home "seconds" for personal projects. The company's showroom, shown in color on the front cover, featured as many samples as could be crammed onto its four facades and roof. Since the company's commercial projects are scattered all over the country, the extant examples in this town, documented in detail in this historic preservation organization's publication, provide a unique opportunity to see many examples within a short walk of each other.
