Buongiorno’s painting is a copy of Harvesters by French Realist Jules-Adolphe Breton (1827–1906) , shown below. Breton probably painted this canvas between 1850 and 1880. Breton documented workers of his native Pas-de-Calais country region of France. Buongiorno may have seen an exhibition of Breton’s paintings or a postcard or print of this painting. Perhaps Buongiorno completed his copy as part of his academic training.
